Why the indian calendar is different from english calendar?

If earth is flat, all Indian festivals would be on the same date as India. But unfortunately, the earth isn't flat and hence we have time zones, longitudes, latitudes, different sunset and sunrise timings.

Indian calendar is based on Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and karana. They are based off the distance between the Sun and the Moon. (Each 12 degree distance between them is called a Tithi) The other factors like timezone, local sunrise, sunset, moonrise is also considered. Tithis doesn't exactly start at 0:00 hrs at midnight. They can start at any time of the day/night. Also their duration is not exactly 24 hrs. They approximately vary from 19 to 28 hrs.

These Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and karana start and end at the same time in world like any celestial events and hence if a celestial event happen in India during morning it will happen in USA a day before and in Australia a day after.  Hence an Indian festival date will be different in and outside of India.

Each festival has different rules. Diwali Lakshmi puja is done when amavasya prevails 144 minutes past sunset -- pradosh kala.  When amavasya starts before sunset and next day when it ends before the sunset, we take previous days for Lakshmi pooja but for oil bath we take next day.
